One of our goals at the SOH has been to help the younger generation learn and keep traditions from their past ancestors. Things such as sewing their traditional colorful artwork stitches into clothing and bags, learning how to make rice baskets that in the old generation only the men were allowed to do, learning about herbal remedies from the jungle and learning their heart language to name a few.
One of the parents this week has agreed to teach the students their original heart language. We love when the family can get involved with activities at the dorm and are very encouraged by this as we think it will start opening doors to other family members agreeing to come teach a traditional skill or craft that has been passed down for hundreds of years.
Learning the Akha alphabet.
Learning language through song.
